We left at 3 a.m.

When Sweetie and I went on our honeymoon, one of the hotels we stayed in was in the absolute worst part of Cleveland; it looked like Beirut around the hotel. The desk clerk was behind bulletproof glass. And the room! It was awful. It smelled, was slimy and I'm pretty sure there were cameras in the walls. Also, there was a bug in the bathroom. A really big one.

Needless to say, we never stayed at that chain again, but that doesn't mean we weren't at the mercy of other bad hotels. We've stayed in some where there's wedding parties -- emphasis on the "parties," and we've stayed in hotels that clearly became "nonsmoking" about 10 minutes before we got there, judging by the stink of smoke.

The better way to vacation is renting a vacation home -- so you get to spread out into a whole house instead of one room, and you get a better pick of locations and less crowding from noisy neighbors who may be very excited that their friends are getting married but also are very loud.

You can get that vacation home rental easier than ever, now, too -- by looking on websites like the one for or vacation rentals (that's OR as in Oregon) run by Home Away From Home. This website is excellent -- it's easy to use and will help you get your vacation going in the right direction -- the direction away from noise and crowds and smoke and terrifying hotel rooms and into the direction of a restful vacation.

They've got literally hundreds of home rentals up on the site, with pictures and all the information you'll need to pick one and get ready to enjoy your vacation. Plus, the prices are much better than I imagined -- and not bad, considering what hotels are charging nowadays.

So say goodbye to a cramped hotel room and tiny soap; rent an entire home, and have a bedroom, a kitchen, a living room, and more importantly, have a great vacation.
