Yesterday, I mentioned in Question 20 that there seems to have never been a great, Star Wars-based or Star Wars-inspired song. I thought about that overnight, and on the way into work, and through the various interruptions that have kept me from gathering my thoughts at all this morning -- in my first 44 minutes at work, I have been interrupted from doing what I first set out to do more than seven times; the longest I've gone without an interruption since 8:30 is just under 7 minutes, which this morning is making me feel as though I am part of a psychological experiment of nefarious origin, and which is also making me want to listen to something I enjoy, which is why I'm combining today's post with today's Blogathon question.
If you have not yet taken part in the Blogathon, here's a quick summary: 100 days. 100 questions. Check back every day. Earn points. Leave comments to win prizes. The rules are here; how you earn points is here.
Anyway, I thought maybe the topic -- Star Wars -- was too nerdy, but then I realized that there are all kinds of songs about nerdy topics and they are cool, so why hasn't someone written a cool song about Star Wars?
Here, then, without much explanation because I'm really in a bad mood from the interruptions, are the Ten Best Songs About Nerdy Topics.
10. Code Monkey, Jonathan Coulton:
9. Dark Matter, Andrew Bird:
8. James K. Polk, They Might Be Giants
7. Everyone Else Has Had More Sex Than Me, TISM:
No, that's not a jab at nerds. It's because it includes this stanza:
All loves have to die - of that there's no help;
My favourite way to end em'
Is the orb-weaver spider's, whose pedipalp
Enters the female pudendum,
Then dies on the spot,
his corpse there still stuck,
Left for his rivals to curse it.
He would rather die than not get to f**k:
Personally, I reckon it's worth it
6. 3rd Planet, Modest Mouse.
5. Let's Talk About Spaceships, Say Hi To Your Mom.
4. The Monitor: Bishop Allen:
3. Porphyrophobia, Tom Milsom:
(It's the fear of the color purple.)
2. Commissioning A Symphony In C, Cake:
Today's question, worth 50 points! is:
Which character did Michael Carter portray in Return of the Jedi?
A. Jabba The Hutt
B. Boba Fett
D. Bib Fortuna
Today, commenter number 6 gets the 10 bonus points, provided that person is not also commenter number 5. Since I didn't throw that proviso in yesterday, Andrew Leon got the 10 points for being commenter two, and he got the question right.
And the number 1 best song about nerdy subjects: 11 Planets, by Lisa Loeb, which for some reason you cannot find anywhere on video or even to buy, but you can listen to it here; just click to the page and you'll see the audio player.
