On the other hand, at least the movie's not based on a board game. (365 Poems, #43)

about 1/9 of the way through this!

Love is Not All (Sonnet XXX)

by Edna St. Vincent Millay

Love is not all: it is not meat nor drink
Nor slumber nor a roof against the rain;
Nor yet a floating spar to men that sink
And rise and sink and rise and sink again;
Love can not fill the thickened lung with breath,
Nor clean the blood, nor set the fractured bone;
Yet many a man is making friends with death
Even as I speak, for lack of love alone.
It well may be that in a difficult hour,
Pinned down by pain and moaning for release,
Or nagged by want past resolution's power,
I might be driven to sell your love for peace,
Or trade the memory of this night for food.
It well may be. I do not think I would.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you read that poem, you realize that while 90% of the poem argues that love isn't what you need to survive, the speaker would not trade even the memory of that single night with her lover for food or peace -- even if the need for food or peace was "past resolution's power."

So is the rest of the poem an effort to convince the speaker herself? Or is it instead simply a statement of fact -- that despite it being that love cannot be eaten or drunk or floated after a shipwreck, the proof that love is more powerful than all those things lies in the fact that men kill themselves for lack of love?

The Hot Actress is Naomi Watts, who stars in the "most controversial movie" of the year:  "Adoration."  The plot?

The real story unfolds when Roz had a passionate one-night stand with Lil's son Ian (Xavier Samuel). Roz's son and Ian's best friend Tom (James Frecheville) found out about the one night thing and told Lil about the rendezvous. Consequently, Tom took revenge against his mother and his best friend through having a revenge affair with Lil.

You could see that movie, or you could simply watch the humorous video from Andy Samberg from which the plot is stolen:

I would agree that love isn't all you need and it certainly won't keep you alive without all those other things. That could be a good short story though where someone is stranded on a desert island and offered the sadistic choice of forgetting the love in his love in exchange for rescue.

Could almost be a SEVEN DEADLY SINS short story, couldn't it? You're always marketing, you sly (grumpy bull) dog.

If there wasn't so much distraction here, I'd talk about Maslow's Hierarchy.

I'm gonna look that up.

Love is the subject of a lot of pop songs. This blog is called pop. So love should in fact be the subject talked about on POP. I'm glad you are talking about love. But this is not what I expected.

I think you need to have more Justin Bieber. "Baby baby baby oooh, baby baby baby oooh."

That will re-establish this blog as the go-to source for discussions about love.

And in the end, love is all you need.

Period.
