Ring-A-Ding-Ding (Off The Top Of My Head)

Green Lantern opened this week to dismal reviews, which I find really annoying because once bad reviews come out, I can't justify going to see a movie in a theater (because I am not like people who are able to believe that something is so bad, it's good.)

So I won't be seeing Green Lantern until next year on some weekend when I can't sleep and it's available for free on TV. But I will be thinking about Rings of Power, and hence this Off The Top Of My Head list of Famous Rings In Pop Culture.

1. Green Lantern's power ring.
2. Sinestro's power ring.
3. The One Ring from Lord of the Rings.
4. All the lesser rings from Lord of the Rings.
5. The ring that shoulda been put on it in Single Ladies.
6. Ring My Bell by Anita Ward.
7. Ring Around The Rosy.
8. Ring Lardner.

Off The Top Of My Head is lists created without any research or time to think; read more of them here.

It got a bad rating on Rotten Tomatoes but once I started reading the actual reviews, I came to another conclusion. Here's what Roger Ebert had to say in a nutshell:

"The bottom line: This is a comic-book movie. Fans of the Green Lantern (in his intergalactic story mode and not his earthbound TV series) will no doubt enjoy its visualizations and its references to details of the back story that escaped me. There's a whole lot going on. We don't really expect subtle acting or nuanced dialogue. We appreciate an effective villain. We demand one chaste kiss between hero and heroine, but no funny stuff. We enjoy spectacular visuals like the Green elders, who are immortal and apparently spend eternity balancing on top of towering pillars. "Green Lantern" delivers all of those things, and for what it's worth, I liked it more than "Thor."

So yeah...I'm going to go and see it.

Why is it boxing and wrestling have square "rings?" Isn't a ring a circle? How did that get started?

It's too bad about the Green Lantern. I've never ready any of his comics but I always thought he looked cool because he was green. Incidentally when I was a kid I confused Green Lantern Corps with Corpse, so I thought, "What, is he dead or something?" But I didn't feel like wasting 75 cents to find out.
